THE HISTORY OF MORRISSEY'S BLUE ROSE SOCIETY

In August 2011, a mysterious website called 'MorrisseysWorld' asked Morrissey fans to take either a single RED ROSE or a single WHITE ROSE to Morrissey concerts. The 'MorrisseysWorld' website explained that Morrissey wanted roses, in honour of his literary hero, Oscar Wilde, who had a theme of roses running through his work.

On November 14th 2011, Morrissey's tour of North America got underway, and a handful of fans who had seen the MorrisseysWorld website,  took roses to Morrissey concerts.

On November 28th 2011, Morrissey accepted a RED ROSE on stage in Pomona. It was the first flower of ANY variety, that Morrissey had accepted on stage in years.

On February 24th 2012, Morrissey started a tour of South America, and again, a few fans took roses, but VERY FEW people knew anything about the MorrisseysWorld website.

On March 17th 2012, Morrissey accepted a WHITE ROSE on stage in Bogota, Colombia. The ROSE wasn't thrust at him, he seemed to seek it out.  (See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVaezmLcyi4). Many other types of flower were taken to the concerts, but Morrissey ignored them all, all EXCEPT THE ROSE.

In the 1890's, Oscar Wilde and his followers would all wear a GREEN CARNATION to Oscar's performances. Much speculation was made about the meaning of GREEN CARNATION, but Wilde himself NEVER publicly explained it's significance.

In early 2012, the mysterious MorrisseysWorld website formed the Blue Rose Society, choosing a BLUE ROSE as the theme. Blue roses, just like green carnations, are an unnatural flower, and they are often portrayed in literature as a symbol of unrequited love.

Word started to get around about BLUE ROSE SOCIETY, and more and more people started to take RED, WHITE and BLUE ROSES to Morrissey concerts.

On July 5th, Morrissey's wikipedia entry was updated, to make reference to both the BLUE ROSE SOCIETY and GREEN CARNATION, it read:

"The sign of this secret society is the blue rose; blue roses - as well as their other signs, the red and white rose - have been seen at many Morrissey concerts in 2011-2012 from the US to Colombia. The Blue Rose Society is seen by some as a reference to Oscar Wilde's green carnation-wearing followers."

That VERY evening, Morrissey appeared on stage in Liege, Belgium, wearing a GREEN CARNATION for the first time EVER. The next day, the wikipedia entry had mysteriously disappeared. Members of the BLUE ROSE SOCIETY saw this as absolute proof that Morrissey was behind the BLUE ROSE SOCIETY.

MORRISSEY WEARS A GREEN CARNATION IN LIEGE - JULY 2012

On July 7th 2012, Morrissey played a concert to a large and enthusiastic crowd in Rome. Many of the audience took gladioli, and offered them to Morrissey, but he refused them all. As Morrissey walked onto the stage for the encore, a fan offered Morrissey a bouquet of WHITE ROSES, which he accepted. Once again, Morrissey proved he wanted ROSES, and ROSES only, they are the ONLY flowers Morrissey accepts on stage.

On October 5th 2012, Morrissey began the US leg of his tour in Boston. Again there were many flowers in the audience, but the ONLY flowers Moz accepted, were a bunch of RED ROSES.

On October 10th 2012, eleven year old Morrissey fan, Kyle Douglas, took a BLUE ROSE to Morrissey's concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Morrissey took the BLUE ROSE from Kyle and wore it for the whole of the encore. This was the FIRST BLUE ROSE that Morrissey had ever accepted on stage (See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_UB-wKCcN4).

.........WHERE IT REMAINED FOR THE WHOLE ENCORE IN NEW YORK

On January 8th 2013, long time BLUE ROSE SOCIETY member TRB asked Morrissey's tour manager Donnie Knutson if he could get him into the SOLD OUT David Letterman show, but Knutson said, "No." TRB asked Knutson to give a BLUE ROSE to Morrissey to see if the situation could be changed. Half an hour later, TRB was ushered in to see Morrissey via the stage door.

On February 27th 2013, a Morrissey fan called 'Vulgar' Angie from Los Angeles attended Morrissey's concert in San Diego and offered Morrissey a bunch of BLUE ROSES during the song Alma Matters. Morrissey accepted them.

The BLUE ROSE SOCIETY has a BLUE ROSE RING which is passed from member to member at Morrissey concerts. It was first passed over in Manchester in July 2012, and having travelled to Edinburgh, it then made it's way to New York and eventually ended up on the West Coast of America with 'Vulgar'.

On February 27th 2013, Morrissey's long time support act, Kristeen Young was photographed with the ring.

On March 1st 2013, 'Vulgar' was handed the mic at Morrissey's concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and presented Morrissey with the ring. Morrissey even ASKED for a rose to go with it. Listen and watch here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqPAfo3u3_Y

On March 2nd 2013 at the concert in Hollywood High School, Morrissey leant into the crowd to accept a BLUE ROSE from Morrissey fan Devan.

MORRISSEY ACCEPTS NO FLOWERS ON STAGE EXCEPT ROSES, PARTICULARLY BLUE ROSES.

The BLUE ROSE SOCIETY is growing in numbers, with more and more Morrissey fans now taking roses to his concerts to show their love.

Morrissey is fully aware of the BLUE ROSE SOCIETY, he often wears shirts on stage with roses on, and even wore a gaudy BLUE ROSE tie when he accepted the 'Key to the City of Tel Aviv'.

More and more fans now believe that Morrissey started the BLUE ROSE SOCIETY, just as it was Oscar Wilde who formed the GREEN CARNATION SOCIETY. If you are going to a Morrissey concert, take a rose for Morrissey, and if possible, HAND IT TO HIM, or throw it onto the stage at the encore. BECAUSE WE MUST.

  2. Did not expect to see new posting here, but glad it's here. I see Anon is back, wonder if he realizes that this is a fan site? Last I was aware of, a fan is an ardent admirer, a devotee or follower of someone, in this case Morrissey. If he really hates him so much he can post on solow. Most of us posting here are connected some way with the BlueRoseSociety and if he had read your blog today, he would have seen you provided him with a fairly detailed description of why we are in BRS. As Moz has cancelled SF concert tonight, I want to wish him best wishes and a speedy recovery. Viva BlueRoseSociety!

  4. I hope this is just the beginning for the BRS. It is a privilege to have been part of it from the start & hopefully we will see the number of roses at Morrissey's concerts grow.
It is a beautiful way to show Morrissey how much we love & care for him.

  6. It was beautiful to see a rose waving at the Portland concert, although none of the Twitterdilly Arms regulars were there.

Wishing Morrissey the best of health, may he relax in the Californian/Mexican sun for a while now!

  7. Wonderful update, Rats - it's thrilling to see the addition of the most recent developments in this ever-evolving and beautiful story. Sending best wishes to Morrissey for a full recovery. We hope to be able to continue to shower him with love and roses in concert soon.

All the best to Moz from the Blue Rose Society xx

  9. Nice blog, Rat. I love the Blue Rose Society.

I guess you didn't read what I wrote about Oscar Wilde on an earlier blog. He didn't form the Green Carnation Society, but yes,the green Carnation had a significant meaning between him and his group of friends. The Green Carnation Society was formed through a book written by someone else, and the main characters were based on the lives of Oscar and Bosie. Oscar wasn't much of a fan of the book...I'm sorry to bring it up again, but facts are facts. I'm a stickler when it comes to that sort of thing.

But, anyway, it doesn't matter. The Blue Rose Society is here as a symbol of true love for Morrissey, and that's all that matters. The idea behind a dyed carnation is the same here as it was for Oscar - in a round-a-bout way.

    1. When you say that Oscar didn't form the Green Carnation Society, do you mean it in the sense that his group of followers didn't carry that name? The fact that he encouraged his followers to wear green carnations just as he did seems to suggest there was, at least, some sort of a group united by this sign, even if it wasn't officially titled and recognized. I'm no expert on this, so further clarification would be appreciated - thanks!

      Delete
    2. That's right - Oscar did not form the society known as the Green Carnation. He did dye carnations green and a small group of people in his circle did wear them - which would, indeed, indicate a group of like-minded people.

The Green Carnation was developed in the mind of R. Hitchens who wrote the book The Green Carnation. He based his two main characters on Oscar and Bosie. He took Oscar's Green Carnation to validate a point in his book that represented (secretly) a sexual preferences (in this case, Homosexuality.) The book was released anonymously the first time around, and many people thought that Oscar had written the book. Finally, Hitchens came forward as the writer of the book, but it was too late because, during Oscar's trial they used it against him. Oscar's response was:

"I invented that magnificent flower. But with the middle-class and mediocre book that usurps its strangely beautiful name I have, I need hardly say, nothing whatsoever to do. The flower is a work of art. The book is not.”

So, he wasn't a fan of the book - at all. When asked about the carnation, Oscar added that it was a "conversation piece" Which, back in those days, would have been the best answer. I'm sure it was a secret code for those in his circle, but it didn't officially have a name. It was R. Hitchens who made the wearing of a green carnation a "society". It hurt Oscar more than it helped him, in other words.

But, the BRS is based upon Oscar's book, The Nightingale and the Rose, right? If so, that's wonderful. I just feel that it should be cleared up that Oscar never formed a society, and if Morrissey developed BRS it's most likely due to Oscar's book about a bird giving her life through song to a Rose in the name of LOVE.

  16. Double pneumonia is something very serious! He needs a lot of antibiotics and a lot of rest! This kind of things happen when someone he's really stressed and, usually, people hospitalized came in touch, accidentally, with a lot of virus! I'm truly hoping for a speedy recovery, but, of course, he needs to cancell more date, so I'm hoping for he will not force himself to resume the tour to quickly! Please Morrissey think about yourself, work could wait!
P.S. my condolences to Clover Dean for his grandmother, she is in heaven.

  17. I echo what the others have said. Please Mozzer, put your health first and don't worry about the tour. Everyone will understand that you need to rest. I loved Moz's comment regarding the over-zealous show security:

  21. It is a very serious thing, double Pneumonia and I'm afraid that he's not going to get over this in just a few days. I've had Pneumonia before and it took me nearly a month to recover.

I'm very worried about Morrissey and I just wish he'd rest. I'm so afraid he's going to get set back even more and then he'll have to spend more time in the hospital.

I wish him loads of love and I hope he takes very good care of himself and feels better soon...

  23. I really need to vent my feelings.

I went on AYNIM today, and read nothing but get-well-soon-messages for Morrissey. Then I went into the Twit Arms and again, nothing but get-well-soon-messages.
And then I went on solow, silly me. The usual shitstorm hasn't started yet, there's also lots of get-well-messages, except from our friend Skinny. He says that solow is open for any anonymous abuse, because he wants to provide a place where "you can get the whole picture" (i.e. the whole spectrum of human wretchedness, obviously). A couple of days ago, I asked him a very polite question on Twitter, I just wanted to know if it bothers him at all that he's a moderator on a site that Morrissey hates. No answer. I asked again today. No answer. He blocks anyone on Twitter who gives HIM abuse. He censores posts on solow when they are critical about HIM. "The whole picture" suddenly doesn't taste so good anymore, when YOU'RE the one who's in the crossfire, right Skinny? What a terrible terrible hypocrite.

    Sorry for the rant.

On another note, I have the full MW blog as pdf now. The file is a bit too big to send it per email, but if anyone would like to re-read a specific article, or a full text research if a particular item or person was ever mentioned on the blog, send me a message.

    1. Well said Chuck, I think that we ( here ) all feel much the same about Uncle Skinny.

I find it hilarious that he is a ' moderator ' on So-Low, does he actually know the
      meaning of that word ?

He bullies anyone who disagrees with him and blocks everyone else's comments.
He uses foul and abusive language and intimidates.
I actually don't think he likes Morrissey at all, he seems to prefer Johnny Marr.
Perhaps that is why he behaves like he does.

On another note I hope that you don't get inundated for excerpts from the MW blog !!

      Delete
    2. Thanks for reassuring me that Skinny is a nothing but a cowardly twat. It lowers me that he's getting at me so much today, but he REALLY annoys me.

And I'm not getting inundated :D Most people have saved their favourite articles anyway, and doing a full text search rarely makes any sense, unless there's a question like if Rick Astley had ever been mentioned on the blog. I just enjoyed saving it for my own pleasure and thought I'd let you know, just in case.

  25. Good morning all! Today I dont know if I have to be happy or seriously worried, maybe both! According to some messages on Twitter Morrissey is going to Mexico, this could be a good news, but does he really feel better? I'm hoping for this, but I'm worried to. My daughter had double pneumonia two years ago and after the first dosage of antibiotics she looked very fine and she asked me to go out for playing with her friends, but, of course, it was no possible! I know, Morrissey is not a child, quite possible he's truly beliving to be better now, but why to force himself to working? He loves to play, expecially for latino audience, and I'm hoping for all the best to him and his band! Uncle Schizzy and So low? No, please, better do not spare a word about them, no more! Ciao!
